Come Eat Pizza with Us for a Good Cause

20080714-upn.jpg

20080714-fwfest225.jpg

Where: Una Pizza Napoletana, 349 East 12th Street, New York NY 10003 (at First Ave.; map)
When: 3 p.m., October 11, 2008 (Saturday)
Cost: $85 a ticket (available here)

Attention all serious eaters and pizza fanatics: On October 11, Slice founder Adam Kuban and I are going to be hosting a Serious Eats–Slice pizza-tasting and discussion with Anthony Mangieri at Una Pizza Napoletana. This pizza event is a fund-raising benefit and is part of the New York City Wine & Food Festival.

We're going to talk and eat pizza with Mangieri, surely one of the country's great pizzaioli. There will also be coal-fired brick-oven pizza from Totonno's as well as regular gas-oven New York slices to compare and contrast with Mangieri's Neapolitan-style pizza, along with wine, beer, and chocolate.

Everyone attending will also receive an autographed copy of my book, Pizza: A Slice of Heaven.

Tickets are $85, and all proceeds go to Share Our Strength and the Food Bank for New York City.

So come and eat pizza and hang out with Anthony, Adam, and me at Una Pizza at 3 p.m. Buy your tickets here.

Pizza Pix on Photograzing

From left, recent pizza-related Photograzing submissions from Bitchin' Camero and Nick Solares.

For years, Slice readers have been sending me snapshots of their slices or have emailed asking about ways to upload and share pix of their pizza. There was no easy way to do it.

Until now.

Serious Eats, which Slice has been a part of since 2007, just launched a new food-photo-sharing site last week called Photograzing. You may have missed it in the run up to the holiday weekend. No worries. Head on over and check it out.

Users can upload their food photos from their blogs, Flickr, or other photo-hosting site and share them with other Photograzing readers. So far, there haven't been enough pizza photos for my taste (could there ever be?), but I think you homeslices can fix that right?

Eventually our web mastermind is going to give me a way to promote great pizza photos from Photograzing onto Slice itself. But until then, why don't you prime the pump with some crusty, saucy, cheesy, beautiful pizza porn?

If you want to upload photos, note that your Slice/Serious Eats account will work on Photograzing. If you don't have an account, it's free and easy to grab one.

Hasta la pizza, folks!

Introducing Photograzing

20080702-photograzing-screenshot.jpgAs much as we’d like to, there are times during the day when can’t actually eat something delicious. At those moments, then, we have to resort to the next best thing—looking at delicious food.

Photograzing is a place to share your best food photography, discover new food blogs, and find tasty inspiration. Whether it’s ideas for tonight’s dinner, some eye candy to help you procrastinate, or just a lively connection to the community of food-lovers on the web, we hope you’ll find this new food photography site a staple of your online diet.

Learn more about Photograzing or go and start sharing your perfect pie photos!

Just in case you forgot, the Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party is tonight at 7 p.m. Location: Fornino in Williamsburg (187 Bedford Ave., Bedford Ave. stop on the L train).

If you've already bought tickets, your name will be on a list at the door. If you didn't buy tix already, sorry, Charlie. It's sold out. Better luck next year.

Lactose and My Adios

Slice Is No Longer Being Updated. Feel Free to Poke Around the Archives

20080401-lactaid.jpgLadies and gents, it's time to level with you. I've been having sleepless nights as of late for more than one reason. First, I noticed that whenever I ate pizza or anything with a dairy component, I started feeling funny. I won't go into details, as you may be eating lunch right now, but suffice it to say, it wasn't pretty. After seeing my doctor, he diagnosed lactose intolerance. I pressed on for the sake of this site, trying Lactaid and reading various lactose intolerance forums for tips. Nothing has really worked (not even Lactaid Fast Act).

Which leads me to the other reason I've been up nights—worry and soul-searching.

How can I possibly continue to blog about pizza when I can't eat it?

The truth is, I can't.

So, with regret, I'm here to tell you that I'm going to put Slice in the freezer. I'm done pizza-blogging.

The archives will remain—you can browse them by date or category at right—but from here on out, Slice is but the digital equivalent of the grease stain that remains on the bottom of an empty pizza box.

It's been a fun ride, homeslices. I'll miss you.

Adios and hasta la pizza,
Adam

Help Wanted: Chicago Correspondent

Do you live in Chicago? Interested in blogging for Slice? We're looking for a pizza-mad Chicago correspondent to document the Windy City pizza scene.

You should love pizza and know all the Chicago haunts—from the old standbys to the up-and-comers. From the tourist traps to hard-to-find hole-in-the-walls. And, oh, yeah: You should also be able to write and edit well. This is an ongoing assignment that would pay per post. Details after the jump.

Serious Eats First Anniversary Today

Warning: Nonpizza content follows.

Serious Eats, Slice's post-merger corporate parent, is now one year old. I've been working at Serious Eats as managing editor since shortly before the site launched, and it's been quite a year. Here's to many more!

Menu for Hope 4: Call for Entries

Editor's note: Warning—nonpizza content follows. But it's for a great cause, so no grumbling, folks! —The Mgmt.

20071130mfhlogosmall.jpgIt's that time of year again. As many of you who publish or read food blogs know, each year Pim Techamuanvivit of Chez Pim organizes her Menu for Hope campaign, in which food bloggers from around the globe come together to help those who are less fortunate.

For those unfamiliar, Menu for Hope is an online charity event in which bloggers donate a prize that goes into a virtual raffle. Readers and others may then buy virtual raffle tickets for one or (hopefully) more prizes. Tickets are priced at $10 each, and bidders may buy multiple tickets per prize to increase chances of winning—hint, hint! ;)

Dozens of great food-related prizes are offered each year, with proceeds going to the U.N. World Food Programme, which seeks to fight hunger worldwide. Last year's Menu for Hope raised a staggering $62,925.

As she did last year, Pim has enlisted the help of "regional hosts" to share some of the work that goes into making MfH run smoothly. Serious Eats will be helping out in the East Coast USA region. (A list of other regions appears after the jump.)

I've already contacted last year's East Coast participants (those I had contact addresses for, anyway), but I'd like to call on any other East Coast–based food bloggers who would like to help the cause.

If you're located on the U.S. East Coast and would like to participate this year, instructions follow after the jump. You must contact the regional host for your area to get a prize code before you can post your Menu for Hope prize on your blog. But hurry with your prize proposals, as we only have slots for 99 East Coast USA entries!

New Sidebar Element

There's a new sidebar element over there on the right. You'll see a little "bucket" with collapsible/expandable views that show what's been Recently Commented On here—as well as the latest posts from A Hamburger Today and Serious Eats. If things are looking a little funky, you might want to clear your browser cache.

A New Look: Slice Redesign Rolling Out Tonight

Hey folks. Just a heads-up to let you know that if anything is a bit borky this evening, it's because we've just rolled out a redesigned Slice. The new look incorporates elements of the old but does so in a crisp, clean new way. I think you'll find it refreshing. I know I do after all these years.

The biggest changes are tabbed navigation above the main column and an easier-to-read list of pizza entries by location over in the right-hand column there.

The new tabs simply break out existing material and make it easier to access. Those tabs include:

  • Maps: The Maps page collects maps for each borough as well as one for all coal-oven pizzerias in New York City. I'll also be rolling out a nationwide map soon of all places Slice has visited outside New York
  • Video: The Video page collects all videos we've ever run on Slice, whether they're third-party or Slice-produced. (You can further refine your video viewing to all Slice-produced video: Slice TV)
  • Reviews: The Reviews page lists all reviews Slice has either linked to in various media outlets or that we have written ourselves
  • Recommended: The Recommended page is a hodge podge of some of our favorite posts, our top-choice pizzerias, a handful of books we like and think you should read, and other fun slice-and-pie miscellanea
  • Serious Eats: And the Serious Eats tab simply links back to our parent site

Take a look around, poke about, and let us know if you encounter any bugs. We've worked hard to ensure that there aren't any, but you never know.

Last but not least, many, many thanks to Raphael, our awesome web developer at Serious Eats who is responsible for what I think is an awesome new look.

If you don't see the changes or things look ultra wack, try clearing out your cache.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN, BOYS UND GHOULS!

Halloween Slice DudeGood morning, boys and ghouls, and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I don't know if we've ever formally met, but I believe you have seen me milling about this weblog here and there. Adam is too lazy to give me a name, so I go by "Slice Dude."

Today I am taking over this blog. I will appear throughout the day to SCARE THE LIVING S&*! OUT OF YOU. Or, perhaps, to simply amuse you.

Slice on Facebook

Get on My Group!OK. So I joined Facebook a couple months ago to see what it was all about. Yeah, I know, the college kids have been way into it for a while, and I kinda feel like an old fart on it, but I figured I'd start a Slice group on there for the hell of it.

My thinking is that I'll use it to rally the troops, to raise a "Slice Army," if you will—a group of folks to call on for organized and impromptu pizza field trips. The Slice group is open to Facebook members at large, so if you're on there, even if you and I aren't "Friends" on there, feel free to join. Most of the pizza outings will probably occur in New York, but when I travel, if there are members of the "Slice Army" in any given city, I'll hit them up for taste-tests. So what I'm saying is, feel free to join even if you don't live in the Big Apple.

Here's the URL: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5055932698

By the way, if you're a Facebooker, challenge me to a game of Scrabulous. I'm totally addicted to it.

[And yeah, Slice used to be on MySpace, but I got tired of the spammy come ons from skanky "females," the annoying auto-play songs everyone seems to have on their pages, and the overall crappiness of the design there.]

I [Slice] NY T-Shirt Update

20070718islicenyupdate.jpg

Dear Homeslices Who Have Ordered I [Slice] NY T-Shirts,

Since many of you are asking—and because I should have updated you all earlier—I wanted to give a status report on the I [Slice] NY tees.

I apologize for the delay and thank you for your patience on these. They were just shipped via UPS, and I expect them to arrive at Slice headquarters by the week's end. If they arrive by Friday (and I think they will), I'll be shipping them first thing Monday morning.

Again, sorry for the delay on these. They should be in your hands shortly.

Hasta la pizza,
Adam

Changes at Slice: Accounts Required for Commenting

So the little server hiccups and lack of comments the last few days seem to have been resolved. For those of you interested, that was all part of moving this site over to a new server—the same server that Serious Eats is on.

As you may or may not know, Slice was acquired by Serious Eats late last year, and I began working on SE full-time as managing editor while maintaining my role as editor of Slice. While Serious Eats has been pretty hands-off about messing with the Slice formula, I did anticipate some changes for this site—among them the fact that I'd eventually be asking all my homeslices out there to sign up for accounts in order to comment here.

If you already have a Serious Eats account, it'll work here on Slice (and on Slice sister site A Hamburger Today). If you don't have an SE account and want one, by all means, do register. It's fast, free, and, most important, we won't use your email/personal info for nefarious purposes.

When you sign in or register, you'll be taken briefly to Serious Eats. Once you're finished though, you should be rerouted back to the page you were on here on Slice.

If you experience any problems with log-ins or see any craziness, please feel free to write support@seriouseats.com

Geek Stuff: Minor Maintenance

So this is just a heads-up for you all: We're going to be moving Slice over to a new server in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. As the files and such move to their new home, there might be some hiccups. Please bear with us. If you experience any weirdness, it should resolve itself pretty quickly. Thanks!

Robyn [Slices] NY!

Robyn in the 'I [Slice] NY' Shirt (by Slice)And here's Robyn Lee, my Serious Eats colleague (she recently joined the team) and foodblogger extraordinaire, wearing her I [Slice] NY shirt.

If you've received your shirt and use Flickr, take a photo of yourself, upload to Flickr, and tag it "isliceny"

For those still waiting on their shirts: The USPS picked up the last batch of outgoing shirts a couple hours ago. Expect them soon!

Want one? Get yours here. Limited time only. You'll be unable to buy them after Friday evening.

Want a Slice Shirt? I'm Taking Orders Again!

If you've already ordered: I've been plugging away, stuffing envelopes with shirts, and sending them out in dribs and drabs as time allows. The last batch is getting picked up tomorrow. So your shirts should come soon. (Note: Some folks' orders, however, are on backorder. If that's you, check your email. I've sent you details.)

If you haven't ordered a shirt but want one: A bunch of you expressed interest after I had already ordered and received the shirts. C'mon, people! Early bird, ya know?

But there's good news for you slackers: I'm having a second batch done. DETAILS BELOW »

Look how good these look! (That's Slice reader La Mariposa below modeling hers and me below that in mine.)

HOW TO ORDER
No longer taking orders. Wait till next time!

Reminder: Get Your Slice Shirts

If you've been sitting on the fence about purchasing a Slice T-shirt, you're too late. I've placed the order for the first batch of Slice T-shirts. If you want one and didn't order, email me and I'll put you on the list for the second printing. you better make up your mind soon. I've hit the minimum number of "pre-orders" I need and will be sending the job off to the screenprinter tonight.

Only those who have ordered will get shirts. I'm not having surplus stock made. So order now or forever hold your peace.

If you've already ordered, you should have been contacted earlier this morning with confirmation info. If you ordered and didn't get a confirmation from me, get in touch and we'll sort things out: adam@sliceny.com

Last chance ... $14, shipping is included, sauce stains aren't!

Slice Google Map Mashup 2.0

The Slice Pizza Map - NYC

At one point, I had rolled my own mashup Google pizza map, but when the Big Goog released its My Maps feature, I gave up trying to wrassle with code that I didn't quite understand anyway. I realized it would be easier to use the new feature to serve up Slice's local psearch info in a graphical way.

I give thee the Slice Pizza Map (NYC Edition).

I'm hoping Google keeps refining its technology. I'd like to see custom uploadable icons for place markers and also an easy way to embed My Maps into websites. Only time will tell.

Until then, you can click on the image of Slice's NYC map below or the link at left in the navigation menu.

Huge props to Robyn (aka The Girl Who Ate Everything), who has been interning at Serious Eats HQ and helped tremendously with this map.

NPC: Serious Eats on 'Good Morning America'

Non-Pizza Content follows: Slice's new overlord, the founder of Serious Eats, Ed Levine, is going to make an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America on Tuesday morning (December 26). Ed will share his sources for some serious food for New Year's celebrations. You can find showtimes by checking your local listings.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled pizza programming.

Slice on Sirius Radio Channel 112

Today at 6:30 p.m. EST, I'll be on the Whatever show on the Martha Stewart Radio channel, Sirius Satellite Radio, Channel 112. I'll be talking pizza with cohost Jennifer Koppelman Hutt and her brother, Brian Koppelman, who will be filling in for a sick Alexis Stewart.

Introducing ... Serious Eats

Ay o, o ay, Slicers. Some news ...

20061201SElogo.jpgFor the last few months, I've been working with some folks on a project called Serious Eats. Also part of the project are: Ed Levine, Meg Hourihan, Alaina Browne, Adam "Amateur Gourmet" Roberts, and Roadfood.com. They're all good people, they all have mad passion for food, and they understand what's special about blogging and creating interesting, informative content for the web. Heck, I wouldn't have agreed to work with them if they didn't.

Serious Eats launches officially on Monday morning, but I'm giving Slice readers (and readers over at Slice sister site A Hamburger Today, which will also be part of the Serious Eats community), the chance to preview the site over the weekend ...

Greetings 'Times' Readers

Good morning. If you've stopped in from the New York Times, welcome! Slice is "America's Favorite Pizza Weblog!" We got more pizza here than you can shake a pizza peel at. To find pizza recommendations and reviews in your area, click the "Pizza by Location" links in the left-hand sidebar. While you're over there, you can also navigate our archives by category or month by tugging on the dropdown menus.

A number of your fellow Times readers have emailed us some great pizza recommendations (which we'll be publishing later). If you would like to drop us a line, use this addy: adam@sliceny.com.

Thanks, Readers!

Dear Readers,
In-N-iBookThe email I just received from Scott is only one of many similarly heartening missives I've received in the last month or so. If you've written me and felt like your email has gone down the wrong series of tubes, don't be discouraged. I've read them all and have sorted them away with intent to post them on the site and/or respond via email. I will henceforth make a more concerted effort to respond to your internets sooner rather than later.

Why am I so sluggish? Well, in the past I've often used the excuse "work has been too crazy" when I more accurately should have said "I'm suffering from Blog Depression" or "I'm just too damn lazy."

I should have knocked on wood all those times I used the "busy at work" excuse. You see, a couple months ago, I took a new position with my longtime employer, and ever since, things actually have been so busy at the office office that by the time I get back to the home office at Slice HQ, the last thing I want to do is look at a computer screen. Anyway, things have started to calm down at the job and once again I have a bit more patience for home computerizing, so I'll go back through my inbox and respond to you all.

Moreover, I'd like to thank everyone who has written lately. The response you've shown to this site bolsters my spirits and confirms that I'm not just clogging up the internet's tubes the way the Hut stuffs its pizza crusts. Please keep dumping your emails onto the big truck that is the internet.

Thank you and hasta la pizza,
Adam

Slice Google Maps in NY Post

nypost.gifThis site was mentioned in the New York Post today in a story about Google Maps mashups. Referring, of course, to our Slice Pizza Map.

Nyslice.com lets hungry New Yorkers see the city with topographical pizza goggles on. In other words, the way it was intended.

Unfortunately, the paper botched our URL. In other words, their hungry readers will remain pizzagraphically challenged and hungry.

Day Without Foodblogs

savetheinternetblog_image.jpgReading Chez Pim today, I came across some alarming info:

One of the Internet's great strengths is that a single blogger or a small political group can inexpensively create a Web page that is just as accessible to the world as Microsoft's home page. But this democratic Internet would be in danger if the companies that deliver Internet service changed the rules so that Web sites that pay them money would be easily accessible, while little-guy sites would be harder to access, and slower to navigate. [New York Times editorial desk]

So, I'll participate in Pim's Day Without Foodblogs

You all tired of hearing about this already?

Well, we've still got a very limited number of spaces available for the Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party at Fornino on Monday evening. Three, to be exact.

Anyone still interested in going should e-mail pizzaparty [at] sliceny [dot] com ASAP.

As if the all-you-can-eat-pizza, open bar on beer and wine, and mozzarella-making demonstration weren't enough, I just got an e-mail from Michael Ayoub, Fornino's owner: "As for the commenter who asked about truffles, as luck would have it, the first batch of creamy aromatic summer truffles just got to the U.S. and is being delivered to Fornino today. ... I have some great stuff planned. I'll keep it a surprise for now."

Get 'em while you can, folks. It's a dog eat dog eat pizza world.

P.S.: I promise I'll start posting some new non–Pizza Party entries next week.

Some Updates: Pizza Party and Language Project

Sorry there's been very little in the way of new pizza posts here on Slice. The day job has been keeping me so busy I've had little energy to do anything other than watch Battlestar Galactica reruns when I get home at night.

Anyway, here's what's up with a couple Slice bits o' business that I have had some time for ...
THE GOTHAMIST-SLICE PIZZA PARTY
If you were among the initial group of people to reserve a ticket and haven't yet paid, well, sorry folks. I released those spots back into the pool of available tickets and have offered them to people on the waiting list. The early bird gets the worm, they say.

Good news for all the people on the wait list, however: Everyone who was put on standby has a place at the proverbial table. If I put you on the wait list, you should have gotten an e-mail this morning with the link to buy tickets. If you haven't, please get in touch with me: pizzaparty [at] sliceny [dot] com

For anyone else interested in going, we have 3 slots left. First come, first served. Get 'em while you can. (Use the pizzaparty address above.)

THE 'I LOVE PIZZA' POLYGLOT PROJECT
I've been collecting translations of "I love pizza" for a few days now. The response has been great. Thanks to all who have offered their linguistic services. So far, we have Afrikaans, Arabic, Cantonese/Mandarin, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Korean, Polish, Swedish, and Thai.

I'm going to be doing a couple things with these translations and will let you know when I do. It's nothing earth-shattering, so don't sit on the edge of your seats, but it'll be fun, I think. If you love pizza.

Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party Reminder

Just a reminder to anyone who reserved tickets for the Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party at Fornino: Please complete your payment by 10 p.m. tonight or we will send hired goons to break your legs. OK. Not really. But you'll lose your reservation if you don't.

Anyone interested in getting on the standby list should e-mail pizzaparty [at] sliceny [dot] com. We anticipate spots opening up, as a lot of folks who reserved haven't paid yet. Just e-mail us with your name and number of desired tickets (limit 4 per person). We'll let you know tomorrow morning whether there's room or not.

Refresher: The Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party will take place at 7 p.m., Monday, March 20, at Fornino in Wlliamsburg. $26.06 covers all-you-can-eat pizza and wine or beer for the evening. Chef/owner Michael Ayoub and his pizzamakers will run up and down the pizza menu there, which includes traditional Neapolitan pies as well as Fornino's interpretation of the art form. A mozzarella-making demo will take place. It is an evening not to be missed by pizza lovers and pizza-curious alike.

Please Help: Slice Needs Linguists!

It's not often that we at Slice ask anything of you, our readers. But now's one of those times that we do.

We want to know how to say "I love pizza" in multiple languages. Better yet, we want to be able to type it in the alphabet or character set of the native language, i.e., not transliterated.

We would be forever grateful if you sent us the following languages:

Afrikaans: Ek is lief vir pizza
Arabic: 20060312Arabic.jpg

Danish: Jeg elsker pizza
Dutch: Ik hou van pizza
Finnish: Minä rakastan pizzaa
French: J'adore le pizza
Gaelic:
German (mine's rusty): Ich liebe Pizza
Hebrew (phonetic): Ani ohev pizza
Hindi:
Klingon:
Korean: 20060312Korean.jpg
Portuguese:
Russian:
Swedish: Jag älskar pizza
Thai:
Vietnamese:

We already have Japanese, Cantonese and Mandarin, Spanish, Italian, and French. And, duh, English.

You can send any responses to adam [at] sliceny [dot] com. My computer can handle pretty much any language you can throw at me, I hope.

Thanks,
The Management

Gothamist-Slice Pizza Party

UPDATE: ALL TICKETS SPOKEN FOR. But, people being people, we expect a certain number of cancelations. So feel free to e-mail to get on the standby list (there are only a few names on standby so far). Cancelations will be filled with standby names on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on number of open slots. E-mail pizzaparty [at] sliceny [dot] com.

I hope you're hungry, 'cause get a load'a this: Slice and Gothamist have put together a pizza party
at Fornino in Williamsburg. Tickets will be $26.06 each and include all-you-can-eat pizza as well as beer or wine. We only have 100 total, so reserve them fast if you want to go. Fornino makes some mighty fine pies using some great ingredients, including fresh mozzarella made in house and tomatoes and herbs grown in an on-site greenhouse. Chef-owner Michael Ayoub will be on hand giving a mozzarella-making demonstration, discussing the various ingredients in his pizza, and answering any other questions you might have. A Match Made in Heaven

Hey, pizzafans—some exciting news here at Slice.

bug_sliceofheaven.gifIn a special arrangement with food writer Ed Levine, this site is going to be publishing excerpts from his book Pizza: A Slice of Heaven. Its subtitle, The Ultimate Guide and Companion, pretty much sums up the contents. It's an exhaustive look at this nation's (and Italy's) best pizzerias, with guides and musings on all things pie.

The first of these posts will go up shortly, followed over the next several days and weeks by others. To read them all as a bundle as they start to accumulate, visit the Slice of Heaven archives.

Slice Going to Amsterdam

bloggersinamsterdam.pngLate next month, I'll be going to Amsterdam. Full disclosure: The trip is part of a junket for bloggers put together by Holland.com, the web presence of the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions. Holland.com is paying for the flight as well as five nights in a hotel near the city center, and an Amsterdam public-transport pass. In exchange, I've agreed to sit for an interview with the board of tourism that may appear online or in print, place the "Bloggers in Amsterdam" logo in my navigation bar for one year, and provide Holland.com with one month of premium advertising space on Slice.

Bloggers invited over to A'dam are under no obligation to blog about the trip, but—and this is what Holland.com is counting on—I'll likely file a few dispatches from the Netherlands concerning pizza. I'll likely file some concerning burgers, too, for A Hamburger Today. And any other nonpizza, nonburger food adventures that are interesting enough will likely wind up on Bite by Byte, my new nonpizza, nonburger foodblog.

I wrestled with this offer ethically for a couple of days. After all, it gives the appearance that Slice can be bought. I decided to take the offer, however, because the arrangement is part of an attempt by the Netherlands to draw foreign tourists to the country and in no way involves pizza or hamburgers. If this came from, say, the Chicago Tourism Bureau, offering to pay my way so I could review deep dish pies, I'd have to decline. Others, however, would not let me off the hook so easily. In some circles, the lot of us going on the trip are being compared to Jack Abramoff. Heh. But perhaps the most insightful post of I've read has been the one from Spot-On: The Netherlands 25.

Chez Pim Raffle: We Have Some Winnahs!

20051222grilled.jpgTime to take care of some Slice business now that the holidays are over and my jury duty is on hold for the day ...

Late last year Chez Pim held a raffle to raise money for Kashmiri earthquake victims. Slice donated a couple prizes to the raffle to help spur donations.

Pim announced the winners earlier this month.

The winners of the Slice prizes are: Janelle Gunther and Melissa Cohen.

Janelle, who won the pizza-making kit I offered, is a friend of mine*, so I already know where to send her prize.

Melissa, I'll get your contact info from Pim and get in touch with you in the near future regarding the grilled-pizza party for four that you won. We'll make arrangements for the party then.

Congrats to both of you!

* Even though I know Janelle, I trust that the raffle was fair and impartial. I had nothing to do with the selection of winners. All winners were selected by Pim.

The Feds Are On My Case ...

20060111JuryMap.jpgMore like the Feds want me on a case. Possibly.

By the time this post publishes automagically, I'll be at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse reporting for jury selection. While I'd normally relish a chance to actively participate in justice American-style, I've got a lot of other things going on, so I kinda hope I don't get picked. Especially if it's an evil-ass months-long case, which, given the fact that this is federal court, who knows. And given that this is the same court that heard the cases USA v. Gotti (PDF) and Louima, et al v. City of New York (PDF), all bets are off.

What's this got to do with pizza? A number of things. First is that I won't be at a computer to answer your e-mails. Second thing is that I'll be in downtown Brooklyn instead of my normal lunchtime stamping grounds. I'm near Grimaldi's and Fascati, but I've already done those. Anyone out there got any places for me to try during lunch break? Leave suggestions in the comments section below. I'll check them on break if they don't confiscate my iBook. Third thing is that I'd hate to get on a sequestered jury. (As the late Johnnie Cochran might have said, "If the jury's sequestered, this site will fester.")

Anyway, I guess this is a better way of seeing the inside of a courtroom than from either the plaintiff or defendant's seat, but who knows. As long as they're not trying a case that involves a pizzeria, I've got no prejudices that could get me out of service. Mamma mia.

Also: If you've got any suggestions for pizzerias a little farther southeast of the location on this map here, holla at ya boy. I've also got a Kings County Court juror summons for the 25th of this month. When it rains, it pours.

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah!

20051225Xmas.jpg20051225Hanukkah.jpg

Slice says Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to you and yours. We'll be out of the office for the next few days. So posting will be light, if at all. Have a good one!

Menu for Hope: Grilled-Pizza Party

20051222grilled.jpgJust an update on Chez Pim's Menu for Hope II campaign, which ends at 9 p.m. ET on December 24.

Quick backgrounder if you missed our post on this the other week: Five dollars buys you a virtual raffle ticket in a drawing for any number of cool and delicious food prizes. Foodbloggers from around the world are offering these prizes. The $5 you spend goes to help Kashmiri earthquake victims, via UNICEF. This isn't a scam, and the site being used to collect the donations is safe and secure. Simply choose from the "menu" of prizes, throw in your $5, and Bob's your uncle. Find out detailed info here: A Menu for Hope II.

Slice is offering two prizes.

First, for New York–based folk (or anyone willing to travel here): A grilled-pizza party for four (4) with the editors of Slice in late spring/early summer, when it gets nice out again. This seemed like a really good prize to offer, but almost nobody wants to eat pizza with us. There's only one entrant for this so far. Is it because you can't imagine grilling out with this cold weather upon us? Or does it seem too weird to come over to Slice HQ? If that's the case, we've upped the number to winner + 3. Maybe if you have some of your compadres with you it won't feel so awkward?

Second: A pizza-making kit. Pizza stone, pizza peel, Peter Reinhart's excellent pizza book (with recipes), American Pie.

ENTER RAFFLE HERE. When you get to the donation page, be sure to enter "Slice Pizza Party" or "Slice Pizza Kit" in the Comment/Note field. (Hurry! Raffle ends at 9 p.m. ET on December 24.)

A Slice of the Strike

NYC Transit Strike 2005 comes to Slice! I'm about to set off for work. Walking 8.2 miles from Fifth Avenue and Garfield Place in Park Slope to 42nd Street between Fifth and Sixth aves.

I'm going to test the notion that there's a pizzeria on every corner in New York City.

How? I'll be blogging the walk via cameraphone. Don't worry. You won't see boring-ass pictures of people walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. Instead, I'll be taking a camerapic of each pizzeria I see along the way. Look for photos to appear as they upload automagically via Flickr.

Ah the wonder of the Intenets!

Now: The long march begins!

Vote Early, Vote Often

20051206GSkipper.gifSlice is in the running for Best Urban Food Blog over at Gridskipper, the travel-blog tentacle of Nick Denton's Gawker Media blogtopus.

I hate to grovel for votes, but what the heck: Go vote yea for Slice, if the motion carries you.

Vendy Awards Tonight

Quick announcement here: The Vendy Awards are happening tonight.

Four street vendors will be competing for the title of best food cart in all of Gotham in this inaugural event.

I know, this post isn't pizza-related, but I'll be among the judges, so it's fair game for posting on Slice.

The action starts at 7 p.m. at 27 East 4th Street (between Lafayette and the Bowery). Tickets are available here and cost $35.

Katrina Aid

For some reason, Slice is popping up really high when people run searches for Katrina relief efforts. That's not good. Too many people are clicking through to our site when they should be going somewhere useful. So if you've arrived at our site in this way, here is a list of links to charity and relief websites, most of which come from FEMA:

Hurricane Pizza Relief

20050901PMQ.gifThe folks at Pizza Marketing Quarterly have set up a website to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Pizza Relief offers a way for pizzeria owners and suppliers to send support to the Big Easy and other areas struck by the 'cane.

Sounds weird asking pizzamakers and suppliers to help, huh? We had a little chuckle too, at first. But, according to PMQ's website, several such entities have contacted the magazine and asked how they can help. Some have pledged to send pizza trucks (yes, they do exist), while others are sending frozen dough and cheese.

At Slice, we usually think of pizza as fun, but in this case, it's serious business and can perhaps provide real nourishment to people without access to food. So far, pizzerias from Ohio and Utica, New York, are on board. (Where's the NYC love?) If you're a pizzeria and would like to help, visit the site. (If you're a just a plain ol' pizza-eatin' civilian, you might try America's Second Harvest.

Slice on NY1

20050829AKNY1.jpg

If you live in New York City, subscribe to Time-Warner Cable, and have a high tolerance for hot air, you can tune to NY1 between 6 and 7 p.m. tonight or tomorrow to catch this site's editor & publisher on the air. NY1, for those non–New Yorkers reading this, is like a CNN for the Big Apple. The all–New York-all-the-time channel will air a segment on Google Maps mash-ups in which I appear blabbing about how neat the tool is.

Slice, of course, uses the function in our recently released Slice Pizza Map, which plots all the pizzerias that we or our correspondents have reviewed since this site's inception.

If you didn't see or don't end up catching the piece, you can read and watch the online version here. All in all, it was pretty painless doing the quick, five-minute interview. NY1 technology reporter Adam Balkin did a great job on the editing, making me sound coherent while adding just the right screen shots that illustrate the points I was trying to make. Thanks, Adam!

Renovations Finished

Regular readers of Slice will notice that our renovations are complete. There's not much to say about them except that they bring Slice more in line with its sister site, A Hamburger Today. In addition to a bunch of back-end organization of archives and an updated flag, we've added a Tags feature to our entries. You'll find them just below the headline on posts. It's just another way to browse and was inspired by a post I read on the blog Ishbadiddle.

Gone are any links to The Pizza Peel. We weren't really paying much attention to it, and activity there was few and far between. It's still available for those who found it useful—and we may bring it back in some form. But probably not.

Oh, and we brought back a long-ago short-lived design motif—the red-checkered tablecloth background. Hope it doesn't make you dizzy.

As always with any redesign, there may be bugs. I'd appreciate it if you'd e-mail me at adam [at] sliceny [dot] com with any you might find.

Closed for Renovation

We will return Monday, August 08.

Our Condolences

Pizzerias, Pizza Fans Needed for TV Show

Slice has a bulletin board forum dedicated to pizza. It's called The Pizza Peel. I've got mixed feelings about the continued usefulness of this site feature, but every now and then, something pops up on it that catches my eye. Like this message from a TV producer. I thought I'd highlight it here on the main part of the site:

I’m looking for passionate pizza chefs for a Discovery Times Channel series called '15 Films About Pizza'. I need a pizza chef that believes the Chicago deep dish is the one and only- and a New Yorker that believes the NY style rules!

I'm also looking for a pizzeria brave enough to make pizzas for our global pizza taste challenge. We'll supply the recipes - but who will be brave enough to make curried cabbage pizza?!

This is all good fun- at goes out to 35 million viewers.

Finally I’m also looking for a pizza addict! Can’t go a day without a delicious pizza? Then get in touch.

Email me on michelle@zigzag.uk.com

You heard her, folks. Have at it!

Now It Can Be Told

20050516Debut.jpg

It's been a bit quiet around Slice lately, hasn't it?

We apologize for that. Like a mom who ignores the toddler in favor of the newborn babe, your editor in chief here at Slice has been working behind the scenes for the last month on a new niche foodblog, this one dedicated to hamburgers. It's called A Hamburger Today and is now ready for consumption.

What does this mean for Slice? Well, now that the heavy lifting has been done on A Hamburger Today, I plan on updating Slice more frequently than I have been in the past few weeks. Also, I've learned a lot in building AHT, with help from that site's senior editor, Matty. AHT is leaner and meaner than Slice, and I'd like to slowly move Slice toward a similar design. So even though I'll be overseeing two foodblogs now, I think each will be for the better because of it.

So why don't you click over to A Hamburger Today and have give it a gander. I'll be back posting to Slice regularly after a few days' rest.

Thanks, and hasta la pizza!

Alert: Coney Trip Canceled

The planned pizza trip to Coney Island tomorrow has been canceled. The weather forecast looks absolutely schrecklich. The rain will close the Cyclone, which means a big part of our trip would be pointless. And while the pizza part would still be a viable option, we really want to ride the Cyclone. (And who wants to traipse through heavy rain and wind to get to Totonno's? Not me.)

The Management regrets any inconvenience this cancelation may cause. We'll let you know when the raincheck date is determined.

Thanks, and hasta la pizza.
